The Symbolism of the Lotus: The lotus flower, “padme” in Sanskrit, is symbolic of purity and order. It symbolizes also the Bodhi (Enlightenment). Yes, Star Wars fans that’s where Lucas got the name “Padme Amadala”. The lotus is a water plant and grows in muddy, dirty water. Yet, it rises from the muck in perfect purity like the Buddha attaining enlightenment over the the muddy waters of Samsara. The lotus forms a spiral of repeated forms coming from a central core symbolizing the world of Maya (illusion) spinning off from the true reality of the Dharma. Each petal is a universe unto itself but merely an imperfect reflection of the pure realm of the One.
